Stafford Lake Service work
At Stafford Lake and it's surrounding areas there are continuous problems arising. Invasive species take over the space and uncontrolled water causes erosion. Erosion causes the destruction of nature, and stunts the growth of surrounding ecosystems. Our entire STEM class went on a service field trip to Stafford Lake to help out Marin County Parks and give back to the community . Aside from creating meanders, STEM took part in sheet mulching. Sheet Mulching is the process of laying down layers of cardboard, hay and mulch. This creates a barrier so that erosion can be slowed, and the growth of invasive plants stopped. This layer of Sheet Mulch will last about a year. This approach is all part of the Pest Management Advancement. The PMA system allows for people to come in after sheet mulching, and plant native species to sustain the environment. I enjoyed this field trip very much. It was a good opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful, lasting way, and to learn more about the local ecosystems. It was quite fun as well, because I worked with friends and even made new ones in the process.
