squid dissection
Objective : In this lab we learned how to use a dissection kit to dissect the squid. Squids are part of the Mollusca Phylum witch houses more than 85,000 animals. Our instructions were to explore the squid with our tools
Siphon - Is a pocket filled with liquid. A squids muscle contracts to propel the water out of the pouch allowing the squid to navigate
Tentacle - Is a slender flexible appendage used to bring prey into the mouth/beak
Cecum - Is a pouch connected to the intestines
Ovary - Is the squid's reproductive organ
Nidimental Gland - Is used for transmissions and scanning electron microscopy (sensing microscopic items)
Ctenidium - Is an organ used for respiratory functions. Essentially, it is a "gill" for a Mollusca

Procedure
First, we received a baggie of squid. Using proper dissection tools and protocols we carefully dissected the Mollusca into different categories. This assignment was very broad and let you experiment as much as you like with the tools and squid. I liked how this dissection was very different and allowed you to teach yourself and find your own curiosity and answers. Overall I had a fun experience.
